BOSS Metal Core ML 2
Written by admin on July 10, 2009 – 8:35 pm -In this distortion pedal review, we are going to be taking a look at the BOSS ML-2 Metal Core pedal for the guitar. This pedal can provide some extreme levels of gain, and carries the reputation as being one of heaviest pedals BOSS has ever produced. Sound: The ML-2 offers an extreme amount of distortion and gain. It has a cutting attack that makes it perfect for playing metal riffs. It’s super heavy low end also helps contribute to its unmistakable tone. When using the ML-2 you’ll have no problem standing out among the hardest beats your rhythm section can provide. In comparison to BOSS’ other metal distortion pedal, the BOSS MT-2, the ML-2 definitely comes out as the heavier sounding one. Features: Heavy and durable construction. Controls... more

What is True Bypass?
Written by admin on July 9, 2009 – 1:27 pm -Whenever you are looking for a new distortion pedal, or effects pedal, you will undoubtedly see the term “true bypass”. While most of us might just read over this feature and think, “Sounds good to me!”, it is definitely an important feature to understand. So, what does True Bypass mean? True bypass is a feature of effects pedals that allows the signal passing through them to completely avoid, or bypass their circuity when not engaged. This will make the pedal appear completely transparent when not in use. The main thing that true bypass addresses is signal loss, which can affect your overall tone. You’re tone would sound different passing through a pedal’s circuitry than it would going straight to the... more

Best Guitar Tuner
Written by admin on July 2, 2009 – 6:07 pm -A quality chromatic guitar tuner is one of the most important pieces of gear that a guitarist can have in their setup. Nobody wants to hear out of tune riffs, and nobody wants to play out of tune chords. The best solution to this in my opinion is the BOSS TU-2 Chromatic Tuner. Click here to find the BOSS TU-2 on sale at EBay. This is the best guitar tuner in my eyes because of it’s features, accuracy and reliability. You really can’t beat having a stomp-box style tuner like the BOSS TU-2. This design provides easy and quick tuning while on stage, and it allows you to switch to silent bypass mode tuning with just a single press of your foot. The LED display on the pedal also takes all the guess work out tuning your guitar. It has... more

BOSS Loop Pedal
Written by admin on June 24, 2009 – 6:12 pm -A loop station effect pedal is a great way to practice your improvisation techniques, put together entire songs, do some jamming or perform impressive compositions of live music. The loop pedal I am going to review today is the RC-2 Loop Station by Boss. It does everything that a great loop station should do, and is available at a very reasonable price. The pedal allows you to record, layer and loop samples of your guitar playing. Its other features, such as, tap tempo, auto start and advanced undo/redo make it a really easy piece of gear to use as well. BOSS RC-2 Loop Station One of the main things I liked about this pedal was it’s user friendly interface. Everything that you need is right under your fingertips, and there are no confusing... more

Danelectro Overdrive Pedal Review
Written by admin on June 15, 2009 – 1:45 pm -In this review, I’m going to be checking out the Danelectro Cool Cat Series CTO-1 Transparent Overdrive pedal for the guitar. This is a really great pedal and it performs like a pedal 3 times its price (You can find it new on EBay for around 20-30 bucks). The CTO-1 has a pretty solid construction. It has a metal casing, and also metal jacks. It felt sturdy when I played it, and the foot switch seemed very responsive. It has control knobs for volume, treble/bass and gain. A nice feature of these knobs is that they are out of the way when playing, because they are located on the top of the pedal, as opposed to the front. This pedal does a great job at delivering classic, warm over driven tones, without sacrificing any of the natural tones... more

How to Build a Custom Pedal Board
Written by admin on June 3, 2009 – 6:06 pm -If you’re a guitarist with an abundant amount of pedals, you know how frustrating it can be to keep them all organized and powered, and a Custom Pedal Board is the solution to this problem. There are pre-made pedal boards available for sale, but the benefits of a custom made one is that you get to design it to exactly match your needs. Below is a checklist of all the supplies you’ll need and some general steps to follow to get your pedal board up and running. 1. Pedal Board Base You’ll want a sturdy base for your pedal board, so I recommend using a piece, or pieces of plywood. When you are selecting your base, you need to keep size in mind. Before you purchase the supplies, lay out all of your effect pedals in the order you’ll... more

Written by admin on May 26, 2009 – 3:38 pm -In this distortion pedal review, I am going to be taking a look at the Blackstar HT Series HT-DRIVE pedal. This pedal is definitely one of the warmest sounding tube overdrive pedals that I have ever played. If you love the sound of an overdriven guitar, then this is the perfect pedal for you. It’s genuine tube design offers tones ranging from a warm boost, to a really nice rocking crunch sound. The HT-Drive’s A-Class tone control ensures that your playing never appears dull, or diminished by the pedal. Tube Power: The HT-Drive boasts pure tube overdrive power. Virtual Zeppelin – Black Dog
Written by admin on May 7, 2009 – 6:22 pm -If this is your first time hearing Virtual Zeppelin, be prepared to be blown away. These guys are awesome. The guitars, drums and bass are spot on while the vocals are hauntingly familiar of a young Robert Plant. To me, the most impressive aspect of their recordings is that they do each part separately, and then mix it all together into a cohesive masterpiece. When I say recorded separately, I mean that the members span the globe and collaborate only through the web. Here is an awesome version of Black Dog performed by Virtual Zeppelin. Distortion Pedal AC Adapter
Written by admin on May 7, 2009 – 6:09 pm -If you are still powering your distortion pedals with an endless amount of 9 volt batteries, I think it is time you looked into using an AC Adapter instead. Using an AC Adapter has a number of advantages over using your basic battery. A battery will begin draining as soon as you start using it, and this can affect your pedal’s sound. An AC Adapter always functions at the same level and will improve the performance of your effects pedals by providing them with more operating power. Most distortion pedals will drain your battery if you leave your guitar cables plugged in. This means that you need to unplug your entire setup every time you are done playing. An AC Adapter allows you to leave your cables plugged in all the time, keeping... more
