In this distortion pedal review, we are going to be taking a look at the BOSS ML-2 Metal Core pedal for the guitar. This pedal can provide some extreme levels of gain, and carries the reputation as being one of heaviest pedals BOSS has ever produced.

Sound: The ML-2 offers an extreme amount of distortion and gain. It has a cutting attack that makes it perfect for playing metal riffs. It’s super heavy low end also helps contribute to its unmistakable tone. When using the ML-2 you’ll have no problem standing out among the hardest beats your rhythm section can provide.

In comparison to BOSS’ other metal distortion pedal, the BOSS MT-2, the ML-2 definitely comes out as the heavier sounding one.

Features:

Heavy and durable construction.

Controls for: Level, Low End, High End and Distortion.

Heavy Distortion Tones

Recommended For:

Nu Metal

Grind Core

Industrial

Hard Core

Heavy Metal

Overall, this is definitely a top notch distortion pedals in terms of both tone and quality. It will be a perfect addition to any guitarist’s set up who is looking for a crushing amount of distortion. I loved the sharp edge that it gave my solos and riffs while testing it out, and it also produces some great harmonic tones.

The controls are very responsive and allow you to dial in your perfect tone quite easily. After a little bit of experimentation, I guarantee the ML-2 will deliver exactly what you are looking for.

Here is a video demo of the BOSS ML-2 Metalcore pedal that shows the tones that this distortion pedal is capable of achieving.

The BOSS ML-2 usually runs for about 1oo dollars, but you can find brand new ones and slightly used pedals for a much lower price on EBay.
Read a review of the BOSS TU-2 Chromatic Guitar Tuner.

A quality chromatic guitar tuner is one of the most important pieces of gear that a guitarist can have in their setup. Nobody wants to hear out of tune riffs, and nobody wants to play out of tune chords. The best solution to this in my opinion is the BOSS TU-2 Chromatic Tuner.

Click here to find the BOSS TU-2 on sale at EBay.

This is the best guitar tuner in my eyes because of it’s features, accuracy and reliability. You really can’t beat having a stomp-box style tuner like the BOSS TU-2. This design provides easy and quick tuning while on stage, and it allows you to switch to silent bypass mode tuning with just a single press of your foot.

The LED display on the pedal also takes all the guess work out tuning your guitar. It has a meter stream of 11 LED lights that make it very easy to recognize when correct tuning has been achieved. This pedal is very easy to see and read on dark stages which is definitely a plus.

This chromatic tuner also has seven different tuning modes that will accommodate both bass and electric six string guitars.

Tuning Modes:

Chromatic

Guitar Regular

Guitar Flat

Guitar Double Flat

Bass Regular

Bass Flat

Bass Double Flat

Additional Features:

Has a tuning range of 8-octaves, which is the widest available in this class of pedal tuners.

Tuning mode settings and display options are stored in the tuner’s memory

The BOSS TU-2 can also act as a power source for other 9V effect pedals.

Overall, I think the TU-2 is really the best guitar tuner that you can get for this price. It offers a wide range of tuning modes, and is extremely accurate. It picks up every note instantly, and has a very easy to read LED display. The pedal is also built very well, and has never given me any problems what so ever. I recommend this to any guitarist looking to stay in tune.

Read about the Boss RC-2 Loop Station Effects Pedal for the guitar.

A loop station effect pedal is a great way to practice your improvisation techniques, put together entire songs, do some jamming or perform impressive compositions of live music. The loop pedal I am going to review today is the RC-2 Loop Station by Boss. It does everything that a great loop station should do, and is available at a very reasonable price. The pedal allows you to record, layer and loop samples of your guitar playing. Its other features, such as, tap tempo, auto start and advanced undo/redo make it a really easy piece of gear to use as well.

BOSS RC-2 Loop Station

One of the main things I liked about this pedal was it’s user friendly interface. Everything that you need is right under your fingertips, and there are no confusing menus and sub-menus to navigate through. This makes a very viable piece of equipment to use when playing live. It’s size also allows it to fit in right beside your other stomp boxes without taking up precious space.

This stomp box is capable of recording and storing around 16 minutes of audio. The RC-2 will accept inputs from either your own musical instruments, or from external devices like MP3 players.

The sounds of the recorded audio samples stay entirely true to their recorded source. There is no loss of tone or presence at all. It sounds like you have a couple buddies jamming with you right in the room.

Boss RC-2 Feature List:

Capable of recording and storing up to 16 minutes of audio

Advanced loop timing functionality

Has built in realistic drum patterns that are easily accessible

Easy to use interface

Can capture audio from external devices

Allows you to record, loop, layer and store your tracks.

Overdrive Pedal review for the Danelectro CTO-1 Transparent Overdrive pedal for guitar.

In this review, I’m going to be checking out the Danelectro Cool Cat Series CTO-1 Transparent Overdrive pedal for the guitar. This is a really great pedal and it performs like a pedal 3 times its price (You can find it new on EBay for around 20-30 bucks).

The CTO-1 has a pretty solid construction. It has a metal casing, and also metal jacks. It felt sturdy when I played it, and the foot switch seemed very responsive.

It has control knobs for volume, treble/bass and gain. A nice feature of these knobs is that they are out of the way when playing, because they are located on the top of the pedal, as opposed to the front.

This pedal does a great job at delivering classic, warm over driven tones, without sacrificing any of the natural tones of your guitar and the adjustable gain level can be tweaked to provide a wide range of great overdrive sounds. This Danelectro is a great addition to your set up if you are playing through a tube amp, and are looking for a boost in your gain.

Overall, Danelectro has done a great job with their CTO-1 Transparent Overdrive pedal. It is an affordable pedal that produces professional tones.

Recommended for: Rock, Classic Rock and Blues.

In this effects pedal review, I am going to be taking a look at the Fulltone Fulldrive 2 Mosfet overdrive pedal for the guitar, which is really one of the best pedals available these days. This is the most recent Fulldrive dual stage overdrive pedal from Fulltone. It has some great features, and produces some truly amazing tones. The settings on this pedal allow you to really shape your sound. It provides a great Transparent tone, while also providing plenty of Boost and Overdrive. The Fulltone also has a separate Boost channel, which makes it like having two pedals in one

.

Specs for the Fulltone Fulldrive 2 Mosfet Overdrive Pedal

The Basics:

The Fulltone offers clean boost, and Overdrive.

It has two channels, the Overdrive Mode and the Boost Mode, which ultimately allows this one pedal to do the work of two.

This pedal is also very durable. It is housed in an blue powder coated 16 gauge steel enclosure.

The Fulltone Fulldrive has a wide range of very responsive settings (Volume, Tone, Overdrive and Boost)

The Sound:

Great for adding a boost to your clean guitar sound.

Provides non-compressed Overdrive. The Overdrive level can range from soft to medium and effectively preserves your guitar’s original tone.

Adds violin like sustain

Perfect for many different styles of playing like Rock, Metal, Blues and Country.

The Settings:

Volume – Controls the output level of the pedal

Tone – Very responsive presence control that can be used to smooth out and add harmonics to your sound. There are three different modes for Tone selection that the user can toggle through. This adds a lot of versatility to the pedal.

Compcut – This setting is perfect for adding clean boost to your sound. Plenty of volume comes along with this setting and it provides a wide range of tones.

FM (Flat Mids) - Produces a very transparent tone that allows your guitar’s original sound to stand out. A lot of overtones come through with this setting.

Vintage – Adds more gain, mid range and sustain.

Overdrive – Controls amount/level of drive that is add to your sound.

Boost – There are two different Boost modes that the user can switch between.

Standard – Provides your basic clean Boost

Mosfet – This is entirely unique to this pedal, and adds more low end and growl to your sound when engaged.

Overall, this is a really great Overdrive/Boost pedal that I highly recommend looking into. It has very responsive controls that allow for it to have a wide range of tonal capabilities. The Fulltone is sure to fit right into your style of playing.

The Fulltone Fulldrive 2 Mosfet really does sound great too, and the video below will demonstrate just what this pedal is capable of doing.

So I came upon this demo for the Electro Harmonix Big Muff Pi Russian, and felt that I had to share it with everyone. This pedal sounds pretty sick. I love the distortion tones that it creates. It just sounds, awesome.

It seems like the Big Muff Pi (US) is more about Fuzz tone when compared against this one.

Well, I’ll let the video speak for itself…

The Boss DS-1 is a great overall Distortion Pedal that offers some great tones, at an affordable price. This pedal usually ranges from $40-50, and sounds like it is worth a lot more.

The DS-1 is a pretty standard Distortion Pedal, and can be used in a variety of playing styles. It really excels when used to play rock tunes and punk songs though. If you’re looking for a heavy metal distortion, this pedal would not be my first choice. For that I would recommend the Boss MT-2.

Like all Boss pedals, the DS-1 is built to last. It has a sturdy steel casing, and will withstand a lifetime of use.

The pedal has controls for Tone, Level and Distortion so you’ll be able to dial in that perfect sound.

Here is a video that I recently recorded that showcases the sounds of the Electro-Harmonix Little Big Muff distortion/sustainer pedal. I really love this pedal because of its heavy low end and crunchy high tones. The Little Big Muff is one of the best fuzz pedals I have ever played, and it is definitely worth checking out.

I also include the pedal settings I play with, so you can get a similar tone out of yours if you like what I’ve done.

The Little Big Muff is the brother of the Big Muff which is the distortion pedal that Jack White of the White Stripes uses.

Read a great distortion pedal review of the MI Audio Crunch Box. This review contains information on the pedals features, and also provides a video that showcases the distortion pedal's sound.

Today, I am going to review the MI Audio Crunch Box distortion pedal.
This pedal is designed to deliver a high gain, vintage British sounding distortion. The tone it creates is similar to a cranked up Marshall Stack, and as soon as you play it you’ll be wondering how they fit so much Marshall Tone into such a small pedal. The pedal has a lot of gain to it, and even when played at a mid-level setting, it still delivers some incredible distortion sounds.

The controls on the Crunch Box allow you to dial in some outstanding tones. It’s gain control provides very pronounced harmonic overtones, and some seriously crunchy distortion tones. The tone control can be used to really dial in the perfect sound of your guitar by adjusting the high and low end levels. The MI Crunch Box also has a cool hidden feature, the Internal Presence control, which is used to “shape” the dynamics of the pedal’s tone.

I had the opportunity to play through this pedal with a Gibson Les Paul, and let me tell you, the humbucking pickups and the high gain characteristics of the Crunch Box are a match made in musical heaven. The pedal really does a proper job of accenting the natural tones of the Les Paul, while providing some screaming distortion at the same time.

This distortion pedal, like all MI Audio effects pedals, is hand made and comes with a 5 year warranty. Each pedal is built by hand, individually tested and designed to provide a huge output signal. The heavy-duty aluminum enclosure on the MI Audio Crunch Box makes it able to withstand some serious use. This is one of the best effects pedals I have played over the years, and really give it my full recommendation.

This video showcases the kinds of awesome tones you can achieve with the MI Audio Crunch Box Distortion Pedal. The guitar being used in this demo is a Fender Stratocaster.
